Postcard, foreign stamps
the ruffles of a Spanish skirt
beloved, familiar handwriting
even children know these things
when she returned she brought me a plastic bull
cheap 1970’s flocking that kids love
sad glass eyes
red rosette spear stuck through its flank
I removed it with my teeth
hoping by taking out hurt
we’d both be whole
A crisp, short, and beautifully evocative piece!
I can picture you pulling that spear out with your teeth, and the thought comes, “Of course. I’d expect no less (unless, maybe by chance, there was a pliers handy).”
When I was quite young, some neighbors went on a vacation to Mexico and brought back a gift, a fairly large plaster fighting bull with a coin slot in his back, like a piggy bank. It stayed in my room for a long time.
I definitely wasn’t whole in 1979, barely even a human.
A hatchling awaiting her brilliance I bet
<3 You're a sweetheart for saying so, dear Candy. π But that would take at least another 20 years! π
